Josh Homme (HOM-ee) is an American singer-songwriter and founder of the rock band Queens of the Stone Age, among many other things.

Key thoughts:

  • Podcast starts off talking about traffic and anger. Josh has several motorcycles and jokes about navigating through LA traffic on his motorcycle. Other drivers try to block him from lane splitting, “If I’m stuck in this, then you should be too!” Misery loves company, Missouri Loves Co. People trying to elevate themselves by bringing others down. Believes people are doing the best they can with the tools they have and are coping in the wrong way using anger. JR – As a kid, people don’t teach you how to think properly.
  • Joe highly recommends book he is currently reading: Empire of the Summer Moon by S.C. Gwynne.
    • JR: “This book is fucking insane man.”
    • About tribes vs settlers war. Pure insanity of what it was like.

    • Question – What was it like before TV, radio, internet, cell phones – and there was just war? Amazing that people lived like this.
    • Talks about how ruthless Comanche Indians were.
    • Learning – Women had a high miscarriage rates because they rode horses a lot back then.
    • Don’t assume that your way and your society has the best way of doing things. Be open-minded to others. Believing your society and your “times” way of doing things is the best is just being a “dickhead”.
  • Crazy thing most people overlook – Mexico speaks Spanish because Cortés (Spain) conquered Mexico a long fucking time ago (early 1500s).
  • Joe’s thought: America was founded in 1776…people live to be 100…shit that’s only 3 people ago!
  • Josh story: Stung by a scorpion in Mojave desert. Everything comes out at night in the desert. If you’re not wearing shoes, you’re making a huge fucking mistake. Scorpions are bad-ass and confident. After stinging him, it charged at him again, “It was 100% sure that it was going to fuck me up again.”
  • Talks about how bad-ass Praying Mantis’s are and watch video:
  • Talks about how smart orcas are. Will easily take down great white, by surgically eating out their liver.
  • Dolphins raise kids for 6 years. Males will try to kill a females baby so they can fuck again. Therefore females will be hoes and fuck a lot of males, so that the males don’t know if it’s their baby or not (therefore not killing the baby).
  • Noise pollution is seriously messing with sea life communication. Back before engines and sonar, sailors could hear the animals communicating with sonar to each other (sounded beautiful).
  • Trash island is caused by the sea current accumulating man-made debris. Used to be nutrient island, because all the best sea nutrients would accumulate there, and sea life would flock there to eat.
  • David Goggins – craziest dude Joe knows at pushing himself to extremes.
  • Alex Honnold – rock climber of Free Solo. His brain waves don’t get freaked out anymore. Born natural or developed?
  • Fascinating how he maintains a meditative mindset through action. Most people lose the meditative state of mind as soon as they start doing something.
  • Esther Hicks – Joe really wants to get her on the show. Josh attributes a lot of his recent self-growth to getting into her stuff.

    • Body is a storage to protect and create your thoughts.
    • If you say can’t, then certainly you can not. If you say you can, then it’s as if it’s already done.
    • Josh asked himself – “Someone has to make it, why not you? Let’s go for it. And really go for it.”
    • Esther changed his perspective. It’s okay to go for what you want.
    • Awareness, Strength, Passion, Success, Seeking, Going for it. Embrace challenges and welcome them.
  • Joe and Josh both love “The Tale of Two Wolves”

  • Thoughts manifest reality. You are creating reality with your mind.
  • Josh – “Reserve the right to be surprised by life. We are either growing or dying. I’m less interested in dying.”
  • Joe asks Josh: “How much do you pay attention to criticism?” Josh: “Zero. I haven’t read about myself in over a decade. What am I going to do, go door to door and change peoples perspectives about me?”
  • Josh: “I love insurmountable odds. Tell me there’s no way you’re going to make it.
  • On responding to criticism, Josh says thats what they want. When they know you’ll engage you actually manifest them to come back for more.
  • The world is very different than the one 20-30 years ago. Kids would rather play a basketball game (video game) than go outside and play a basketball game.
  • Book recommendation: The coddling of the American Mind

  • Joe recommends, highlights the issues kids are having today with depression because of cell phones, social media use, suicide rates up, etc.
  • We need less rules. Now walking on the grass is prohibited some places. LMAO, grass is supposed to be walked on.
  • Need an honest dialogue about drugs – instead of labeling them (marijuana) as a gateway drug. For example, what is it that you are masking or hiding from by taking a drug?
  • Dr. Gabor Mate

    • Joe recommends, speaks about addiction/drugs. Thinks that origin of almost all addiction is trauma.
  • Josh credits book Daring Greatly by Brene Brown

    • This book was a breakthrough for Josh, vulnerability is the opposite of weakness.
  • Joe talks about his issue with Onnit – Alpha Brain product having extra vitamins in samples tested. Caused by Chinese manufacturers not cleaning vats properly between making products. Often the source of trace violations found in pro athlete drug testing.
  • Josh recommends The Gift of Nothing book
  • Joe and Josh talk about their cars. Joe having a 1965 Corvette, Josh having his first ever car – ’67 Camaro. Joe, “Damn that is amazing!” Josh just put a crate engine Dyne blue printed 350 with aluminum heads.
  • Joe talks about methane problem found in LA. Results of testing were unexpected, showing huge amounts of methane are coming from landfills, steaming piles of trash.
  • Boyan Slat has new device made for rivers. Making commodity out of plastic/trash pulled from river.
  • Joe says its so unnecessary to keep making fossil fuel plastics when we already have a biodegradable plastic made from hemp.
  • Check out Josh’s new album – Desert Sessions 11 & 12.
